Abstract

Orthodontic relapse can be defined as the tendency of teeth to return to their original position after tooth movement, this is an undesirable outcome of orthodontic treatment. The relapse rate after orthodontic treatment is about 70-90%. In general, ortho-dontic relapse prevention is attempted mechanically by using retainers. Prevention of orthodontic relapse can also be done pharmacologically with medications such as bisphosphonates, although bisphosphonates cause unwanted effects in patients. One of the natural ingredients that can be a solution to this problem is golden sea cucumber (Stichopus hermanii). This review discusses the role of golden sea cucumber in preventing orthodontic relapse in a systematic review. Articles were searched through Pub Med and Google Scholar databases which were then analysed and the result was that golden sea cucumber plays a role in preventing orthodontic relapse by increasing osteogenesis and periodontal ligament remodelling. It is concluded that Stichopus hermanii can be an option to prevent orthodontic relapse because it increases osteogenesis and periodontal liga-ment remodelling through its ingredients such as flavonoids, heparan sulfate, chondroitin sulfate, collagen, and hyaluronic acid.
