Gabapentin as an adjuvant analgesic to reduce postodontectomy pain

Abstract
Acute pain occurs as a result of tissue damage either accidentally due to injury or the impact of surgery. Acute postoperative pain is a manifestation of inflammation due to tissue injury. Postoperative pain and inflammation management is an important component of patient care. Gabapentin is an antiepileptic drug; now licensed for the treatment of peripheral and central neuropathic pain in adults for postherpetic neuralgia, other painful neuropathy, and nerve-related pain. This article determines the effect of giving gabapentin on pain in postodontectomy patients. Eight patients with a diagnosis of impacted teeth 18, 28, 38, 48 under-went odontectomy surgery under general anesthesia at Dental Hospital of Hasanuddin University. The patient was treated for one day postoperatively and given oral medication cefixime 200 mg, ibuprofen 400 mg, and gabapentin 100 mg. Pain and side effects of gabapentin were evaluated on the 3rd and 7th postoperative days. It is concluded that gabapentin as an adjuvant anal-gesic that could reduce postodontectomy pain.
