Abstract

This review aims to discuss the effectiveness of gabapentin in third molar postodontectomy pain management. The literature re-view was conducted through PubMed, Cochrane Library, EMBASE, Ovid Medline, Scopus and Web of Science searches for original articles, case reports and reviews using the keywords pregabalin, gabapentin, postoperative pain, third molar surgery, rescue analgetic, visual assessment scale. It was found that patients who received gabapentin had satisfaction in pain scores and no rescue analgetic and side effects of nausea and vomiting after gabapentin administration. A multimodal analgesic approach can greatly reduce postoperative pain burden and may lead to a reduction in postoperative complications, length of stay, and risk of developing chronic postoperative pain. It is concluded that gabapentin is effective in the management of postoperative pain following third molar odontectomy.
