Abstract

Washing alginate impression with water only reduces the number of microbes to 48%, so they need to be disinfected. Rosella flowers are believed to be an alternative disinfectant that is antiviral, antioxidant, and also antibacterial. Rosella flower petal in-fusa extract (Hibiscus sabdariffa) as a mouthwash can inhibit bacterial growth at a concentration of 10%. The inhibition of ro-sella extract against Streptococcus mutans bacteria according to some studies is close to the inhibition of chlorhexidine 0.12% which is the gold standard antibacterial. This study was intended to determine the effectiveness of 10% rosella extract mouth-wash as a jaw impression disinfectant against the growth of micro-organisms. This clinical experimental research, and pre and post-test design was conducted by spraying 10% rosella flower extract on the impression within 5, 10, and 15 minutes after the impression. Based on the Kruskal-Wallis test, the sig. value was 0.035 (p<0.005), there was a significant difference between bacteria and treatment types. The LSD test also showed that the pre-test, post-test 10 minutes and 15 minutes treatment types significantly affected the number of bacterial colonies (p<0.05). It is concluded that 10% rosella extract mouthwash is ef-fective as a impression disinfectant towards reducing the number of micro-organism colonies at 10 minutes and 15 minutes.
